An Open Letter to Our Community

©1999 CNN LESSONS FROM LITTLETON

We read reports and see newscasts of children killing children with guns; of teens dying on the streets in an argument over a jacket, and people ask, "why?" Yet many of those asking "why" continue to pay their money to finance the support of the industry that promotes the snuffing out of people's lives.

We hear statistics of women being victims of sexual crimes. We watch television programs and movies that promote adultery and "safe sex", and sex without marriage, as natural and common. We pay our money to the industry that floods the market with this stuff too, and what we disagree with - we tolerate.

Every time something like Littleton happens, "experts" rush in with sociological explanations. But we're no closer to a solution. Are we surprised at the spectacle of children killing children? We shouldn't be!

We should have known ... should have anticipated ... that children who have become desensitized and have grown up in a society without parental discipline, where there are no moral absolutes, and where the sanctity of life is no longer valued, might come to see little harm in gunning down their classmates.

Where did we go wrong? At least some of the answers can be found in the radical notions that have emerged in the U.S. during the last 30 years. A country where judges and legislators have made it illegal for schools to post the Ten Commandments, and where God and prayer have been expelled from the classroom. Where students are told that their ancestors are apes. A government that allows school officials to pass out condoms at school (without parents' consent) to kids who assume they are expected to use them - while the Gideons cannot distribute the Bible. A nation where, at the expense of their children, it's easier to obtain a divorce than terminate an automobile lease. A country where States are prohibited from protecting innocent children, in the process of being born, from those who would puncture their skulls and suck out their brains. The list goes on. Madness! We are literally seeing the end of Western civilization!

We are the ones that by default have brought upon our land a flood of violence and wickedness. Our children are but a reflection of our values - they only know what we have taught them.

Do we feel anything when a child dies of gunshot wounds? If we do, why do we add our contribution to those who are responsible for the violence, or in other cases, simply look the other way and pretend this isn't happening. And, more importantly, why are the pulpits in most of our 300 local churches silent every Sunday concerning their responsibility in these matters?

Let's vow to set for our children the highest standards of ethics and morality - to put their welfare ahead of our own convenience and teach them the difference between right and wrong.

Americans know we are in a moral crisis, it's time we all pull together - Americans of every political party and religious faith - to reclaim a sense of sanity for our nation and our community.

THINK ABOUT IT!
